authors! authors! the video of a zoom-event, a report on Vancouver + all sorts of elsewise,
, and catch rob and Christine read in Dublin, Ireland on July 13, if you're around,
There’s a whole bunch of stuff to report on, at least over here. You probably already know that Christine McNair and I will be reading in Dublin, Ireland at Books Upstairs (17 D’Olier Street, Dublin 2, Ireland, D02 RX06) during the afternoon of Sunday, July 13 at 2pm with Irish poets Christodoulos Makris and Éireann Lorsung. I even produced one of those clever “poem” handouts for such travel, so if you’re in Ireland or a subscriber, there’s something extra to look forward to. And there was even a Vancouver above/ground press launch recently with Meredith Quartermain, Catriona Strang and Brook Houglum (pictured, above) launching new/recent titles that apparently went quite well. This is actually the second Vancouver-specific above/ground press held (both of which I’ve missed), after Stephen Collis, lary timewell and Renée Sarojini Saklikar launched their own new above/ground press titles via WORD Vancouver back in 2016. The above/ground press zoom-launch that a few of us held at the end of May, featuring myself, Tom Jenks, Brook Houglum, Orchid Tierney, Meredith Quartermain and Sandra Doller, also went swimmingly, I must say. If you require proof (although I already suspect you are the trusting sort), you can catch the video from that here, or below.
Otherwise: did you see that Lisa de Nikolits reviewed MLA Chernoff's ESTRO FLUNKY: FIELD NOTES (2023) at the Wolsak and Wynn blog? Susan Gevirtz has a poem up in the “Tuesday poem” series; Miranda Mellis has an essay on Karl Ove Knausgaard over at HiloBrow; J-T Kelly has a stack of poems up at UCity Review, and is featured over at Poetry is Currency; rob mclennan has a new poem up at Scrivener Creative Review; Rebecca Hawkes, John Garaets, and Orchid Tierney talk about Big Poetry, her collection this abattoir is a college, and MFA programmes via Zoom recording; Mandy Sandhu has a poem in the "Tuesday poem" series; a video conversation of Kate Colby and Al Filreas discussing a poem by Laynie Browne at Kelly Writers House is now online; Dag T. Straumsvåg is interviewed over at Touch the Donkey; Rose Maloukis had a poem longlisted for The 2025 Nick Blatchford Occasional Verse contest, via The New Quarterly; Hollay Ghadery podcast interviews Gary Barwin; Colin Dardis has four poems up at Rochford Street Review; Benjamin Niespodziany has new work up at Afterimages; Ben Robinson has some new poems and book recommendations over at Etcetera, as does Michael Boughn; Penn Kemp has four new poems up at The Typescript; and I'd somehow missed that Stephanie Gray had a series of pieces posted over at Jacket2. Lea Graham has a poem up at The Fortnightly Review; Gary Barwin has a poem up at NewPoetry; Stuart Ross has new work up at The Glacier; Miranda Mellis writes on Robert (Bob) Glück for BOMB magazine; rob mclennan has a poem up at Poem Alone, two more up at Blood+Honey, and is interviewed by Mia Funk for The Creative Process; and Orchid Tierney is hosting a free, virtual zine workshop, “pedagogies for the planthroposcene!,” on August 8 at noon as part of Sarabande Books's ⚡ZINE LUNCH!⚡ series.
So many things! And did you see that our pal Dawn Macdonald, our favourite award-winning Yukon poet, mentioned groundwork: the best of the third decade of above/ground press, 2013-2023 (Invisible Publishing, 2023) as part of “10 Canadian poetry books to expand your mind” on Canada Day over at LitHub? Thanks so much! You probably saw via my own blog on Canada Day that I’ve been working my own series of posts featuring Canadian poets over at American writer Olivia Cronk’s Peripety and/or Tronies site, yes? See the series here; see my write-up for such here.
Ryan Skrabalak is interviewed alongside Robbie Wing by Miriam Atkin for "Specific Objects," WGXC: Radio for Open Ears; Julie Carr and Elizabeth Robinson have new work in the latest issue of Posit; Kevin Stebner answers the '12 or 20 questions' interview; Camille Martin has a series of photographs newly posted online; Noah Berlatsky has new work up at dadakuku; Chris Banks has an essay forthcoming in Best Canadian Essays 2026, and Khashayar "Kess" Mohammadi, Erín Moure and Misha Solomon have poems forthcoming in Best Canadian Poetry 2026; Michael Martin Shea has some new translations of poems by Augusto Lunel over at Black Sun Lit; Melissa Eleftherion has new work up Stone Circle Review; Christine McNair is interviewed by Hollay Ghadery for the New Books Network podcast; rob mclennan has a new poem up at NewPoetry.ca, and an interview conducted by Victoria Cole for Horseshoe Literary Journal; Ken Norris has an excerpt of a memoir up at The Typescript; Jed Munson and JoAnna Novak have new work in DIAGRAM; and did you know that Stuart Ross' Proper Tales Press is now on Instagram? Don’t forget: every single one of these authors has an above/ground press title in-print or forthcoming yes? As ever, check the above/ground press sidebar for the list of names to see each author’s latest above/ground press title.
What else do you need to know? Oh, the above/ground press anniversary sale is mere days away from ending, nearing the 32nd anniversary, of course. Irish-Australian Texas-based above/ground press author Nathanael O’Reilly is coming to Ottawa to read at the end of September, as part of The Factory Reading Series (further details to come). And you know that tickets are now available for the big 32nd anniversary reading/launch at RedBird Live on August 7th? Might we see you?
